Tackling the Digital Age in Rail
If you're wondering what the huge CP6 sum of £47 billion is intended for then this newsletter along with our CP6 Launch is a good starting point. As an industry focused networking events provider, we are dedicated to initiating and facilitating important conversations in rail with the digital age on our agenda.
Today, the world is rapidly advancing with a long-term vision of better connected communities as Northern Rail predicts that by 2021 there will be almost 350,000 more services per year than there is today. To match this ambitious projection, the announcement of CP6 is a five-year scheme that aims to tackle the digital age with force.
Driving Digital Difference
The record expenditure of the CP6 funding that will be released in April of next year will prioritise digitalisation in all forms including infrastructure and general processes. In Network Rails proposed changes published in November 2017, the moving towards the use of electronic rather than paper invoices of track access charges was first mentioned.
Since then, the rail industry has further focused on this issue hearing Mark Carne, Chief Executive claiming that CP6 is how we will make the railway more reliable and cost efficient and how we accelerate the technological transformation of our railway into the digital age.
This new era will say farewell to the traditional methods of resignalling as this is phased out in favour of digital train control that will be introduced to enable more services to run in a safer and more cost-effective manner.
Network rail concludes these changes in their recent article on the topic with Carnes closing statement, for the next five years we need to relentlessly focus on making our railway more reliable whilst also ushering in new digital technology that will help transform our railway in the years ahead confirming the firm financial focus on technological advancement.
More to Come
For rail professionals, this topic is central to the upcoming contracts stemming from CP6 finance. Our Launch event in March is a prime opportunity for further discussion with over 200 experienced figures in the industry. Until then, we will be covering digitalisation and all things CP6 on our company blog.
